Central Celebration of the 300th

Anniversary of the Birth of Rudjer Bošković

In the organization of the Croatian Academy of Engineering and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, Central Celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Birth of Rudjer Bošković was held at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall on May 17, 2011. The Celebration was also co-sponsored by CAETS and Euro-Case.

The age in which our great scientist and philosopher lived was evoked by a musical and theatrical work.

His life achievement is almost unbelievable. In his 76 years (Dubrovnik, May 18, 1711 – Milan, February 13, 1787), even in his lifetime and up to the present day, he has become a world renowned philosopher and theologian, teacher, diplomat, writer and poet, but above all a brilliant scientist and prominent expert in solving practical problems.

He wrote scientific papers in the areas of physical structures and materials of nature, mathematics, astronomy, optics, geodesy and cartography, hydro constructions, meteorology, archeology etc. He was a man ahead of his
time.

In front of numerous audience their admiration and praise of the character and work of Rudjer Bošković were declared by the welcome speeches of the President of the Croatian Academy of Engineering Stanko Tonković, Minister of Science, Education and Sports Radovan Fuchs, President of the Croatian Parliament Luka Bebić and President of the Republic of Croatia Ivo Josipović.

The welcome speech of the President of the Republic of Croatia

Ivo Josipović

Distinguished experts in the life and work of Rudjer Bošković, Ivan Koprek, Ph.D., academician Žarko Dadić, Ph.D., Stipe Kutleša, Ph.D. and Ivica Martinović, Ph.D. spoke about various aspects of his activities.

Musical part of the program was enriched by, for this opportunity especially arranged, pieces by Boris Papandopulo, Domagoj Košćak and a young composer Zvonimir Dusper.

In the opinion of those present and the press the success (with the measure and taste) of the celebration was certainly owed to Krešimir Dolenčić (director), Aljoša Paro (set design), Willem Miličević (video and photo processing) and executive producer Goran Granić, Ph.D.Slušajte

President of the Republic of Croatia Prof. Ivo Josipović, Ph.D.

has visited the Croatian Academy of Engineering

On Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 the President of the Republic of Croatia Prof. Ivo Josipović, Ph.D. with associates paid a visit to the Croatian Academy of Engineering in Zagreb, 28 Kačić Street.

He has met the members of the Governing Board of the Academy lead by its President Prof. Stanko Tonković, Ph.D. Members of the Academy have informed the President about the history, organization, activities, publications and aims of the Academy from its foundation in 1993 up to now, and thanked him for the visit and interest in the work of the Academy. Special attention has been paid to the results obtained at home and abroad, as well as to the association with other related Academies around the world. Members of the Governing Board of the Academy acquainted the President with their plans for the future and wishes that the Government, the Croatian Parliament, ministries and economic sector of Croatia would benefit even more from the knowledge and experience of the members of the Croatian Academy of Engineering. Some of them are more renowned abroad than at home (best emphasized at the presentation of the latest achievement of Croatian scientists called „Infrareddesign“, also having been presented to the President of the Republic of Croatia).

The President has pointed out that education in the field of engineering sciences and application of technical achievements in industry today represent some of more important factors for the faster coming out of the recession we have found ourselves in. Without a more significant integration of technical and biotechnical achievements within our economy,   Croatia could not set off with its technological development and preserve the quality of its environment, with the possible lag behind to be perceived in particular at the moment of entering the EU.

During his visit the President has received a Medal of the Croatian Academy of Engineering, the highest recognition the Academy Awards to individuals, the importance of which could best be suggested by the fact that the President of the Republic of Croatia is only the second person receiving the Medal.

The Canadian Academy of Engineering will be hosting the bi-annual CAETS Convocation at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta from July 13- 17, 2009.

This international event aims at bringing together the wisdom and experience of engineers and technological scientists from around the world to discuss how engineering and technology can contribute to addressing the grand challenges associated with the management and sustainability of our natural resources.

The meetings in Calgary will commence on Sunday, July 12, 2009 and will continue until Friday, July 17. Traditionally the Convocation runs from the Tuesday to Thursday of the week, with Friday set aside for the annual CAETS Council meeting. To accommodate this schedule, the CAE Annual General meeting will be held on the morning of Monday, July 13 and the induction of new fellows during lunch of the same day.
